JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, WA - Today's barracks are a far cry from when two soldiers lived in the same room with bunk beds and foot lockers, sharing a bathroom on each floor, very different.
Soldiers from the 38th Cavalry Regiment's 3rd Company in barracks moved into a new barracks building at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on 28 November. of today's life.
New barrack improvements include each room having its own stove, washer, dryer and full bathroom. The two soldiers share a common kitchen and bathroom area, but have their own bedroom with a walk-in closet.
"Having a bathroom here and not having to walk all the way down the hallway in the middle of the night is my favorite part of the new room," said Spc.

The old barracks in Wards 3-38 had communal toilets, showers, kitchens and common areas. Soldiers now have all these facilities in their rooms. It creates an apartment-like living environment. This change is aimed at improving the morale and quality of life of the soldiers.
"It equates the quality of life for married and single soldiers," said Sgt. Ross Downey, squad leader, B Co., 3-38. "I think it follows through on the promise of improving the quality of life for individual soldiers."
The 3-38th's new barracks is one of six new buildings on the complex. In recent years, new barracks have been constructed at several different locations at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. In addition to modern living conditions, the new building is environmentally friendly. Designed to save power and made from eco-friendly materials.

"It's good for Soldiers to live like adults and be prepared when they go out," Downey said.
